Obituary for Richard W. Edwards

R.W. "Buddy" Edwards

Buddy Edwards was born
October 26, 1919 in Haskell,
Oklahoma to Roy and Pearl
Edwards.

He was the
youngest of 3 boys. He
passed away on July 29, 2018
in Ponca City, Ok. Following
high school graduation, he
briefly attended junior
college classes in Sapulpa.

Buddy served in the army in
WW II and was very proud of
his military service. He was stationed
in the Philippines as a coxswain on a
landing craft and was honorably discharged
in 1946. He received recognition for sharpshooting
and ribbons for victory, APT, Good Conduct, and
Philippine Liberation.

Returning to civilian life, Buddy worked as a switchman
for the Frisco Railroad until he retired following
the merger of Frisco and Burlington Northern in
1980.

At the age of 39, Buddy accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord while reading a WW II Gideon New Testament. This completely changed his life.

He met Mae Edwards on a blind date and married her on New Year's Eve, 1959. They had one son, RW Edwards Jr. (Wayne) 10 months later. They were married 54 years.

They were active in church at Carbondale Baptist and at Trinity Baptist Church. Buddy taught a Sunday School class and they were active with the Keenagers. He also was a Gideon representative. Buddy moved to Ponca City in 2014 to be closer to his son and there joined Northeast Baptist Church.

Buddy was a prolific painter in his retirement years. He excelled in scenery and wildlife paintings. As most artists would do, he would sign his paintings. But, then Buddy would put a cross by his name. His way of witnessing for Jesus.

Buddy is survived by his son, Wayne Edwards, and his daughter-in-law, Ellan Edwards of Ponca City.

A celebration of his life service will be at Trinity Baptist Church on Thursday, August 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. under the direction of Mark Griffith Memorial Funeral Home. Interment will be at Haskell Cemetery that same day at 2:00 p.m.

Memorials can be made in Buddy's memory at www.gideons. org.
